The New York Jets have signed rookie wide receiver Alijah Vera-Tucker to a three-year contract. He is the first player from the 2019 NFL Draft to sign with an NFL team, and will provide depth for the Jets at wide receiver.

Alijah Vera-Tucker inked a rookie contract with the New York Jets. The 6 foot 3 inch, 303 pound defensive tackle will be able to compete for playing time this upcoming season.

Alijah Vera-Tucker, a rookie offensive lineman, has been formally signed by the New York Jets ahead of training camp next week.

The team made the announcement on Tuesday evening. AVT agreed to a four-year, $15.9 million deal that is completely guaranteed. There’s also a $8.9 million signing bonus and a normal fifth-year club option included.

This agreement guarantees that there will be no holdout drama leading up to camp and secures a key piece in the Gang Green machine.

The Making of History

Thor Nystrom discusses OL NFL Draft fits for the New York Jets on Monday’s Play Mock Draft. Thor Nystrom (NBC Sports Edge lead CFB, NFL Draft Analyst) joined Boy Green: — If you do the arithmetic, Alijah Vera-Tucker can make it to 23. – Are there any other offensive linemen in the mid to late rounds that might be starters for the New York Jets? — 2-round mock (what would Thor do in this situation)? … 2024-04-05T04:00:07Z

The fact that AVT is back in the headlines provides an excellent opportunity to discuss how momentous the Jets’ pick of him was.

General manager Joe Douglas has had three first-round selections in two NFL drafts. He has chosen an offensive lineman for two of the three.

When he chose Mekhi Becton with the No. 11 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft, Douglas ended a 14-year drought. It was the first time since 2006 that the Green and White has selected an offensive lineman in the first round.

Even more impressive, Douglas picked offensive linemen in the first round in consecutive selections for the first time since 1977 and 1978. This does not include the 2006 draft, when they selected two hog mollies from the same class (D’Brickashaw Ferguson and Nick Mangold).

That reveals what is essential to the Jets’ general manager, particularly as a former offensive lineman.

Some of the Jets’ greatest teams have featured strong offensive lines that not only provided rushing lanes but also protected their franchise quarterbacks.

With a total of 671 pounds of beef between Becton and AVT, rookie quarterback Zach Wilson is appropriately bubble wrapped.

Wilson’s growth is dependent on his ability to stay upright. It’s hardly surprising that so many quarterbacks have labored under center for the green and white during this recent era of trench neglect.

Selecting an offensive lineman in the first round isn’t glamorous or exciting, but it’s precisely what this club needs to build a successful foundation for the future.

They now have a pair of players who have the potential to be franchise cornerstones for the next ten years.

Furthermore, not just historically, but also physically, both of those guys will be joined at the hip.

Becton has been assigned the job of guarding the blindside. Despite his offensive line expertise (at both guard and tackle), Vera-Tucker is expected to line up next to his fellow cornerstone at left guard.

They’re both very good individuals, but having the chance to play with one another will elevate both of their skills to new heights.

Wilson will feel secure in the knowledge that his whole left side is covered by the finest talent a club can select.

Morgan Moses has to be one of the best offensive linemen in the league when compared to the rest of the offensive line. When he unexpectedly became available in May, the veteran right tackle was a late addition to the roster.

Despite the fact that not everything is peaches and cream. In the trenches, there are two major questions at center and right guard.

Connor McGovern, on the other hand, is expected to make a big comeback in 2024, according to what the Jets have informed us throughout this process. They’ve also voiced hope that the superior talent around him would help him get back on track.

It’s a royal rumble-style free-for-all at right guard, and it’s anyone’s guess who will win. The early betting favorite is Greg Van Roten, but because he isn’t superhuman, someone else’s good performance may be enough to turn the tables.
