The Chicago Cubs honored Kris Bryant with a video tribute on Friday night after the San Francisco Giants traded him to them in a blockbuster deal.

Kris Bryant’s day included a video tribute, a No. 17 tile from the scoreboard, and two standing ovations when he returned to Wrigley Field for the first time since being dealt from the Chicago Cubs to the San Francisco Giants in July.
Bryant joked in the dugout before the game, “I’ve never set foot on that [visitors] side of the concourse.” “I couldn’t find my way. I had no idea where I was headed.”
Bryant, 29, seemed set to remain a Cub for the rest of his career after earning minor league player of the year, Rookie of the Year, and league MVP in three consecutive seasons from 2014 to 2016. However, a long-term deal never materialized, and he was dealt to the Giants in exchange for prospects just months before he was set to reach free agency for the first time.

Bryant, the No. 2 selection in the 2013 amateur draft, said, “I had the thinking, ‘Yeah, it would be really great to play for one club throughout my career.’” “I’ve had such ideas, but I’m not sure when it’ll stop.” Those were never my thoughts.
“I’ve made the decision to grin when I reflect on my time here.” There were some difficult moments, but if you had told me when I was selected that I would stay 6.5 years here, win a World Series, be named MVP and Rookie of the Year, play in four All-Star Games, and have a lifetime of experiences, I would have laughed at you.
“I’m sitting here today, and it is exactly what happened to me.”
When Bryant got his first standing ovation during a pregame video tribute, he was clearly moved. Tom Ricketts, the owner of the Chicago Cubs, was among those in attendance. Team president Jed Hoyer and manager David Ross were not present because they are undergoing treatment for COVID-19 after testing positive last week.
Bryant said, “I’m not the greatest at soaking up huge experiences.” “But I’m hoping to discover a method to really absorb everything. Today I’m playing in the outfield. That excites me tremendously. It’ll be fun to go out there and listen to the crowd the whole game.”
When Bryant came to the bat in the first inning with two on and two out against former teammate Kyle Hendricks, he got his second standing ovation. On three pitches, he was struck out.
As the Giants’ bus drove up to the visitors’ side of Wrigley Field, a huge throng gathered to greet Bryant. He compared it to the Cubs’ supporters waiting for them when they came home from Cleveland in the early hours of the morning after winning the 2016 World Series.
Bryant said he’ll try to soak in the unique moments throughout the three-game series, and despite some ups and downs towards the conclusion of his Cubs career — he went off Twitter for a spell and his salary became a talking topic — he has no regrets about his time in Chicago. Quite the contrary, in fact.
“You may be upset about how some things are handled,” he added, “but I got to wear the Cubs jersey pretty much anytime I wanted.” “That is really unique. That is something that not many individuals have the opportunity to do. And you’ll be well compensated for it. I have a great deal of respect for everyone in this company, and I will continue to do so.”
Bryant is most thankful to having played for winning teams every year of his career, including the Giants. He hasn’t ruled out the possibility of signing with them again or returning to the Cubs as a free agent, though the latter is a long shot.
For many seasons, the Cubs and Bryant have been unable to reach an agreement on a deal. Returning to Chicago would be a surprising turn of events now that the other 29 clubs would be allowed to bid on his services.

Whatever happens, Bryant’s time in Chicago will be remembered fondly because he was a member of a squad that ended the country’s longest title drought.
“It means a lot to me to be a part of winning teams from the time I came here,” Bryant said. “Winning is all I’ve ever known as a Cubs player.”
“This is where I call home. It has always been like way.”
