Manchester City put a tough week behind them on Saturday, sweeping to a 5-0 win against Arsenal, who were reduced to ten men.

The victory came after a difficult few days for the champs. Pep Guardiola’s side failed to sign Tottenham striker Harry Kane earlier this week before rivals Manchester United beat them to Cristiano Ronaldo’s signing, with City still looking for a striker in the closing days of the transfer window.

City may be disappointed in their pursuit of additional offensive reinforcements, but they had no such issues on Saturday, winning for the 11th time in 12 games against their hapless opponents. The North Londoners’ early-season woes continued, as they dropped their third game in a row. The team hasn’t had such a bad start to a league season since 1954-55, and pressure is mounting on Mikel Arteta to turn things around. Granit Xhaka’s dismissal in the first half didn’t help him, as the day soon devolved into a damage control exercise.

Ilkay Gundogan scored after six minutes, followed by two more goals from Ferran Torres and Gabriel Jesus shortly before halftime. On 52 minutes, Rodri made it four, and Torres added a fifth on 84 minutes to cap the onslaught.

Prior to start, the club unveiled two statues outside the Etihad for Manchester City icons Vincent Kompany and David Silva, providing some joy for the home fans. Despite Arteta’s conservative squad selection, there were plenty of statues in the visitors backline.

Caleb Chambers, Sead Kolasniac, Martin Odegaard, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang all came in for Arteta, who had previously worked as Guardiola’s assistant at City. He also deployed three centre-backs in a back five in an attempt to restrict City’s variety of offensive ability.

Arsenal, on the other hand, quickly fell behind. Gundogan nodded past Bernd Leno to put the home side ahead after Jesus’ cross reached him at the back post. Moments later, Gundogan came close to making it 2-0, but Leno rushed out to stop him.

Arsenal’s nerves were frayed, and they fell farther behind. Torres made it two on 11 minutes, eluding his man and sending the ball home with ease.

It quickly deteriorated. After Xhaka’s rash decision to two-foot a challenge on Joao Cancelo, referee Martin Atkinson had no choice but to dismiss him, and after only 36 minutes, several away supporters had had enough and walked out.

Those who remained were stunned when Jack Grealish wriggled down the left flank and found Jesus, who slammed home from close range to end the game.

Arsenal was thrashed 8-2 by Manchester United ten years ago on Saturday, and Arteta, who joined the club in the aftermath of that loss, must have experienced that same sensation again just after halftime. Rodri’s stunning side-footed shot from outside the box into the bottom corner added to City’s misery.

Torres scored his second goal of the game on 84 minutes, nodding past Leno to make it five for Arsenal.

It was a walk in the park for City, who had 97 percent possession at one point, while Arsenal’s search for their first point — and goal — of the season continued.

Following the game, Guardiola indicated that City may not acquire a striker before the transfer deadline, but he also praised Arteta, his former assistant.

Guardiola told BT Sport, “Arteta knows how much I adore him.” “He was critical to what we created in the two or three years he was here.” People want immediate results, and given the guys he had today, Ben White and Thomas Partey were absent, as were many of the players they had invested in, it was tough.

“I am aware of his knowledge as a manager and a leader, and I am certain that once everyone has returned, he will perform admirably. I know this because I know who he is and what he is capable of.”
